Resumes and Cover Letters

If you are a current ACC student, before getting started, make an appointment with ACC Transfer Services (for help with applications, paperwork, resumes, and admissions essays).

I also recommend ACC's career counseling office.

Traditional college students who have not been lucratively employed for at least five years should write a simple one-page resume, using a format similar to the ones here (please note the examples on pages 5-8).

If a two-page resume is required, outlining extra-curriculars, try the format on pages 6-7 of the same document.

There is a plethora of excellent information offered in the McGill career document (linked above) that I've been referring to, so please peruse all of it.

If you have been employed successfully for five years or more, the examples in the Harvard document linked here are helpful.

For cover letters, I like the format used on page five of the Harvard packet. At the very bottom of your cover letter, be sure to include a signature in between sincerely and your typed name, and then type an email address and phone number underneath your signature.

Like the McGill packet, the Harvard resume guide contains a wealth of information that you should definitely check out.

When writing your resume and cover letters, it is imperative that your grammar and punctuation is flawless and formal, your bullet points are parallel, and that you avoid weak words.
