Utilizing critical thinking and the nursing process, the student is expected to:
Describe the purposes of wound dressings
Examine the principles involved in selecting the appropriate type of dressing materials based on assessment of the wound
Identify the purpose and characteristics of different types of dressings and products
Describe the assessment of wounds during a dressing change
Demonstrate wound care, cleaning, and irrigation
Describe the procedure for removing sutures and staples
Demonstrate how to properly culture a wound
Describe the use and nursing care of wound drains and wound suction apparatus
Demonstrate the ability to use proper technique to change a dressing on a closed surgical wound, irrigate a wound, and apply wet-to-dry dressings.
