Utilizing critical thinking and the nursing process, the student is expected to:
1. Identify common clinical problems:
a. Nausea/vomiting
b. Pain
c. Change in level of consciousness, mental status, confusion
d. Change in cardiac status: vital signs, signs of hemorrhage, signs of impending shock
e. Change in respiratory status: dyspnea, hypoventilation, vital signs, pulse oximetry, confusion
f. Change in renal function: I&O, weight changes, lab values
g. Change abdominal status: bowel sounds, distension, bowel movements, reports of abdominal pain
h. Changes in hepatic function: lab values, other assessments
i. Wound/incisional status: color, condition of stitches/staples, swelling, drainage
2. Identify pertinent signs and symptoms, and methods of assessment
3. Identify what data you would gather to report to the physician
4. Identify appropriate independent nursing actions to take
5. Identify the physician's orders you would anticipate
