A few important elements of the senior project:
All Projects must include research and an action component.
Every project must address ALL four ASFG learning goals.
Project should reflect a minimum of 40 hours of time, including time spent on the research paper for English class and mentoring
Students are allowed to work in groups of no more than two.
Each student must show independent and collaborative work.
Research and oral presentations are to reflect the original work of each student.
A group of two must show 40 hours of outside of school time. (at least 20 hours per person)
Students are to document the process of the project on their websites, and by providing visual and written documentation of doing the project. (see more details under website tab)
Students must document work with photos that show the development of project
Even better, students should have a documentation letter from the organization stating what the students accomplished.
Students may do an academic science investigation as a senior project. It must be entered in the science fair and the experiment must include at least one month of data collection. Students should find an additional mentor teacher to assist in guiding the student through the scientific investigation.
For academic and/or artistic investigations, students must find an additional mentor to guide them in the process.
You may not miss class to do your senior project; it will be considered an unexcused absence. Please plan accordingly.
Materials such as brochures, teaching materials, handouts, etc... should be shared with mentor teachers in advance to allow for feedback.
If a student completes more than 15 service hours in the senior project, any extra hours may be used toward the high school service requirement.
Essential Elements to Consider
*If you are doing a 'teaching' project, all lesson plans must be posted on your website, photos from all sessions with you in them are needed, feedback from mentor teacher is needed.
*All personal learning projects must have a clear outcome and way of sharing your learning in a meaningful manner with others.
*If you are doing a project that was started by students in a previous year- you must show what is new in your project.
*A minimum of 40 hours is expected
*The project culminates with two events:
an expo-style fair
a formal oral presentation in front of a panel of ASFG community members.
*Successful completion of the project (completing project, website, and the oral presentation expectations) are requisites to graduate. Students who are not successful in meeting the deadline will have a final opportunity to present AFTER graduation.
*If any student presents an unsuccessful oral presentation, they will be given one extra opportunity to present before graduation.
THINGS TO AVOID
*Parents may not do parts of the project for a senior.
*Students may not work for any agency/organization where a family member works or has a connection.
*Starting a business is acceptable for the senior project (especially social entrepreneurship). However, any profits made should be donated to a related service organization or charity.
* All of the action parts of your project should be completed by the end of Quarter 3. Time management is key.
