2015 Alcona FFA Chapter Maple Syrup Celebration Day

You could feel the excitement and certainly smell the sweetness in the air today at the seventh annual maple syrup celebration in Alcona. People flocked to buy some of the fresh maple syrup that has been tapped and bottled by the students of the Alcona schools at their very own factory, their Sugar Shack. The Sugar Shack was opened up in 2007 after the FFA decided to utilize the land the Alcona schools stood on to produce syrup. So far this year, 35 gallons of syrup have been made out of 1,700 gallons of sap collected by the motivated students part of the FFA. The students run essentially everything that the day has to offer from giving tours of the Sugar Shack to preparing and serving the free pancake breakfast. "It helps the students interact with the community members,” advisor Michael Suitor said. “A lot of our students are shy, and it helps them get out there and meet new people. It helps the community come in and see what we're doing." All money collected from donations and syrup sales helps cover the cost of the celebration day, and any extra goes back into the Alcona High School FFA fund.
