DEFINITION:
Human trafficking is the dislocation of someone by deception or coercion for exploitation, through forced prostitution, forced labour, or other forms of slavery
THE PROBLEM:
The slave trade is prohibited under Article 4 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, yet the modern-day slave trade that is human trafficking is the fastest-growing form of organized crime.
It is estimated that two children per minute are trafficked for sexual exploitation.
UNICEF believes this amounts to an estimated 1.2 million children trafficked every year.
Human trafficking generates between 10 and 12 billion dollars a year.
SLAVERY IS NOT LEGAL ANYWHERE, BUT IT HAPPENS EVERYWHERE
COMMON RECRUITMENT METHODS OF MODERN-DAY SLAVERY:
Individual recruiters look for interested males and females in bars, cafes, clubs and other public places
Recruitment via informal networks of families and/or friends
Advertisements offering work or study abroad
Agencies offering work, study, marriage or travel abroad
False marriages
Purchase of children from their guardian
MEANS OF RECRUITMENT:
Deception by promises of legitimate employment and/or entry
Deception through half-truths
Complete coercion through abduction or kidnapping
Selling a person, typically a child
Deception about working conditions
Abuse of vulnerability
METHODS OF ENTRY TO THE TRANSIT/DESTINATION COUNTRY:
Smuggled entry in vehicles, containers, trains, ferries or on foot
By presentation of stolen or forged documents that provide a right of entry
FORMS OF EXPLOITATION:
Sexual exploitation
Forced labor
Removal of organs and of body parts
Criminal activities
Begging
Forced marriage
Illicit adoption
FORMS OF CONTROL INCLUDE:
Debt bondage
Violence and fear
Isolation by removal of identification and/or travel documents
Linguistic and social isolation
Threats of reprisals against the victim's family
Psychological - imprisonment and torture
Magical beliefs and practices
