ICT - Computer Crime

Many businesses are now so dependent on the data that is stored on their computer sysstems that if it were lost or damaged they would find it very hard to carry on as normal.

When data is lost or damaged it us usually due to human error. Sometimes data is damaged deliberately or even stolen. It is important that businesses take steps to protect data form being stolen, lost or damaged. They must also make sure that they can get their data back if anything ever does happen to it.

The spread of information and communication technology (ICT) has resulted in an increase in the misuse of data that is stored electronically.

Use the software of your choice to create a poster about the risks of ICT and crime.

Software you may use include: Publisher, Powerpoint, Word or any painting software.

Include: Illustrations about the different types of Crime and ways to prevent them.

• Before the growth of the Internet, what were the most common methods that criminals used to try to commit fraud?

• Give three examples of common types of internet fraud and explain briefly how people get cheated out of their money.

• Explain what the term ‘phishing’ means.

• Explain how criminals use ‘phishing’ to cheat you out of your money.

• Explain what a ‘key logger’ is, and how it helps the criminal to find out your personal details.

• Explain what the term ‘identity theft means’.

• Explain how criminals manage to steal your identity.

• List four precautions that you can take to keep yourself safe from fraud.
