Season Recap
This season resulted in our best regular season record of 14-6 with a very demanding schedule against many outstanding opponents.
December started with a lot of excitement with an OT win at home against Salem where Salem had a shot to win at the end and the buzzer never sounded and they got at least 1-2 extra attempts before everyone realized the time had run out. Our players seized the OT in convincing fashion. We then wen to 2-0 with a solid win over Lenawee Christian and their twin towers. Our players had a 4th quarter explosion to comeback and then win going away in our 2nd game. Huron for our 3rd game was an extremely mature and experienced team against our players who were trying to find their way as an inexperienced talented group and we were no match at that point of the season. Followed that up with a real bad loss at Bedford playing our worst game of the year and did not play hard. Very disappointing. December finished with a loss at the very talented and tough Clarkston team that was ranked in the state's top 10 during the season. December finished at 2-3 and 0-2 in the conference.
Our team had to have a serious meeting about what it means to play hard and we practiced what it meant to play hard for the remainder of the break getting ready for the Pioneer game to start January.
January was our best January ever. We were undefeated for the month! Started with a solid convincing win at Pioneer with our outstanding student section who were amazing! This game also triggered our student section to new heights. We then beat Monroe, Saline and Belleville in 2 OT in an absolute battle. We finished January in dramatic fashion beating a very talented and deep Dexter team in OT at their place and capping it off with probably our best overall game of the season with a win over Ypsilanti at home in a battle of toughness and will.
February started with an epic game at Holly who was outstanding at pushing the ball and outside shooting. They started out very hot and we were in a large deficit to start and we battled all the way back in a game that if it was 1 min longer, we would have won it. So fun to watch and play in. The next game we played a ton better against Huron compared to the start of the season and needed to make a couple more shots and we came up short with a loss. Feb started out 0-2. We then had two very convincing conference wins over Bedford and Monroe, further showing how disappointing the December loss against Bedford was.
Sunday Feb 22 was a very memorable day with the kids playing at the Palace of Auburn Hills, then watching the Pistons take on the Wizards. Our team was firing on all cylinders against Crestwood pulling away right from the start and not looking back as all the players got into the action early and often in teams of five. It was an awesome day!
Next game was a dramatic last second shot win over Pioneer where Marshal Alexander-White caught an inbounds pass with under 2 seconds remaining and made a 3 pointer at the buzzer from the top of the key with the score tied to give us the win and seal our 2nd place conference finish.
The last three games saw a great solid win over Saline, our 2nd poor effort of the year against Lincoln in a loss and then finishing on Senior Night at home with a big win against Warren Woods Tower where we were down early and then Jonathon Muir-Cotton went into absolute beast mode to finish his home career with a 34 point effort to help us pull away.
The very successful season ended too early with a narrow 1 point loss to Pioneer in the district after two regular season wins over them. Our guys got out to a 14 point first half lead and was looking good and then Pioneer was able to cut it down to single digits before the half. After quite a few bizarre calls and plays one after the other which sent anger waves through the stands, Pioneer had gotten to almost a double digit lead of their own early in the 4th quarter. You had to be there to believe it. Our kids continued to battle and just barely came up short of sending the game it into overtime. Every season ends with a loss unless you win it all and of course this was not a loss that were ok with unfortunately.
Overall it was an outstanding season with our best 14-6 regular season record to date and we got a ton out of our team and it is a credit to our players as dedicated people and competitors and our seniors were able to still do some firsts to add to our very successful program history!
