Season Recap
A season filled with huge successes that helps to confirm all of the hard work and mental toughness that is being developing within our program. A huge credit goes to this years players as well as the players that came before them to build a foundation of hard work, determination and positive social/life choices. Credit also goes to our strength and conditioning trainer Coach Brandon Bedinger, the entire basketball coaching staff and the entire Skyline Staff to build a positive, supportive culture for our student athletes.
This year we were 2nd in the conference with a 12-4 conference record. We then won a district championship beating Pioneer and Huron in back to back games. We then won a regional title beating storied programs Lansing Eastern and Kalamazoo Central. We lost in the State Semifinal game to eventual state champion Muskegon ending the season 17-8.
We began the year with 2 very bad losses in terms of us giving up an average of 70 points in those two games. We could not stop anyone. We made sure at that point that we got back to pure defensive fundamentals and made it known to our "starters" that if they were not going to play defense, then they were not going to play. The next three games we gave up 25, 37 and 33 points respectively. Our "starters" then started to buy in to the total effort and defensive mindset that we needed and our season continued to get better from there.
At 4-4 heading into our home game against Bedford, it had the feeling of a huge game. It turned out to be an EPIC battle that we will talk about for a long time. 4 OT win and both teams just went at it. It was a special night to remember.
At 7-5, we went to Lincoln for another memorable game against a ranked team. As we had a lead most of the night, Lincoln hit a 3 at the end of regulation to tie the game and we took a quick lead in overtime and hit our free throws going down the stretch.
The next game was at Huron and being down about 43-18, our kids ended up cutting the lead to 1 over a 4 minute stretch that was ending the 3rd quarter and just into the 4th quarter. Huron held on for the win.
After losing at Bedford on Valentines Day in a close game, the team was ready for its outstanding run to end the season.
The team ended the season with an 8 game winning streak and ALL were double digit convincing wins. It included a District Championship over Huron, a regional semi-final win over East Lansing and a Regional Final Championship win over Kalamazoo Central. The season ended with a loss to Muskegon in the final eight game who went on to win a very convincing state title.
Tristan Wilson exploded through this end of the year run with tons of rebounds, blocks and dunks to highlight the total special team effort.
This team was able to show the Skyline Community what the basketball program here is capable of achieving and to help set the expectations for future teams to heights above what they may believe is possible.
It was a very special season!
