Season Recap
A season of ups and downs in the final year for our first class of seniors who began the school 4 years prior as a freshmen only group. Only 3 players; Theron, Jordan and Sakthi remained from that first freshmen team that stunned the basketball world with their first varsity win as a freshmen only team over East Jackson in the Class C District State Tournament game in 2009.
This season started as if we were going to set the bar extremely high for all future Skyline squads right out of the gate in our first full year with all 4 classes. Beginning the season 7-2 with a narrow 2 point loss to Chandler Park and UM recruit Derrick Walton and a convincing 10 point win over #5 ranked powerhouse Warren De La Salle, we seemed poised to make a lot of noise in the state rankings.
However we had some problems in how our kids were taking care of their business and messages had to be sent that we were going to do things the right way no matter what and the turmoil caused us to lose some games we should not have lost and not all players finished the season with us. It ended up being a year of learning experiences about what we need to do as a program to be successful. We finished the year at 10-10 and a 5-7 conference record.
Our seniors made one last really strong push to pull off their last spectacular win in their overall amazing careers at Skyline and it came up ever so short against Huron in the district opener where we outplayed Huron in the 2nd half and could just not convert the last layup to get us the lead in the final seconds.
Looking back at it, we are so proud of our kids having not had the older kids in the building to show them the way and although they did make more mistakes than they probably would have had we had strong senior leadership to show them the way, they gave our program the excitement it needed with their athleticism and flare for the spectacular to plant the seed for future years and to lay the foundation of a strong and successful boy's basketball program.
