Only applicable to students who kicked off prior to 10th July 2023
The objective of 42 is to make you a skilled software engineer and this requires training, a lot of training. This starts on your first day and continues until the end of your curriculum.
What is the blackhole?
The Blackhole (BH) is the system that 42 uses to ensure that you are progressing at the required rate to stay at 42. Students are expected to study at least 24 hours per week. We would advise students to aim to submit 1 or 2 projects per month. If you can’t validate at least 1 project per month, please contact us to discuss. We have resources to support you, but we won’t know that you need support until you let us know.
The Black Hole will appear on your intranet as a countdown of days. It is a countdown of days left to progress and stay in the school.
Every time you validate a project, you will gain XP and get additional days
The amount of days has been designed to not catch committed students studying full time
It just applies to the 42cursus "inner circle" and not to the "outer circle" (specialisations)
How to manage blackhole?
In the beginning, you have 77 days to complete your first project and earn XP which will extend the blackhole.
A common mistake is to consider the Black Hole date as “the date when you have to submit another project”: this will for sure get you into trouble, because it is absolutely not what that date means.
If you fall under 30 days of Black Hole, you get in the risk zone: make sure you adapt your work schedule and spend more time working on your curriculum. Do not use AGU freezes to avoid or manage the Black Hole!
If you need a side job, we recommend that you don’t work more than 3 days a week. If this is not enough to sustain yourself, we would advise you to contact our staff (bocals).
Wellbeing Support
You can request for an extension via 42 request form if you have any unexpected circumstances that is beyond your control.
