Interview preparation

PACK Taiwan is a famous dog shelter in Sanzhi, New Taipei City. We began research on PACK Taiwan and started correspondence a few months before we finally went to PACK Taiwan in Sanzhi on May 28th. After we arrived, the manager of the shelter welcomed us, and one of the staff members introduced the shelter to us. After this brief introduction by the staff, we learned that they used to have numerous kinds of animals, and they decided to only focus on dogs after years. Our journey to understand more about stray dogs began at this time…

We first went to an area that contains dogs that have health issues and dogs that are mentally disabled. The first thing I noticed when walking into the shelter space was that the environment was so much cleaner than I thought, and we can tell that all dogs are well-protected and look happy. Although there were numerous dogs in the shelter, each dog is still well-protected and the staff takes good care of them. What’s more, the dogs that are severely disabled even have their own individual rooms, something that impressed all of us very much.

Sequentially, we went to the academy of the shelter, an academy meant for the dogs being prepared for adoption. After we went there, the dog trainer “Winnie”

came to welcome us. He brought a few dogs to the “school” and told us that these dogs are able to understand people’s instructions. One of the dogs that made an impression on us is a dog named “Sparkle.” Sparkle is super cute and loves to play with humans. And although she may have had a bad life, after being taken care of by Pack, she became happy and healthy again. The trainer showed us that she can do many tricks; for example, you can tell her to sit down, lie down, and shake hands. This also impressed me.

In the aftermath of this experience, we learned the difficulty of caring for so many dogs at once. As well as learning the importance of trying our best, we also learned that things that seemed impossible will definitely come true if we put our efforts into them. It is indeed difficult to maintain such a large shelter, but they did their best and followed their passion. This is how a successful care organization is built. (by Jim)

Website preparation

Building a website is one of the most straightforward ways to publish and popularize our ideas. In order to perfectly and clearly display the final result of our hard-work, we put a lot of effort in website design. We’re so convinced that building a website could work, we ended up building two versions.

At the beginning, we leaned towards creating a simpler website. We used pink as the theme color to symbolize the affection we have toward those stray dogs. Overall, it took three to four months to build this website. However, after thinking about capturing public favor and also speeding up the progress of the style and composition of the website, we decided to make another attempt and work on the second rendition, and choose the better of the two to publish.

For the second website, we chose blue as our theme color. Firstly, it’s because it’s the color of our logo. Secondly, we think the color brings a more modern feel. We also changed the arrangement of all the buttons and pictures. The formatting we chose allowed us to go from broad to narrow fields of dog caring information, another and better way to organize and show our project.

Building the whole website with CSS and HTML gave us the possibility of being able to customize everything. We took advantage of this and designed the website to be as similar to a slideshow presentation as possible, as we wanted the website to have an informative function. However, interacting with the audience is still a significant priority for us, especially when we have the issues discussed in our project. Therefore, we added a comment area and linked it to the backend we have. In our case, it's a great place for readers to present their ideas related to it. Moreover, it's a way for us to gather public opinions, which is better for our further improvement of our club in the future.

In short, the whole process took time and energy and it also challenged the passion we have towards programming. Nonetheless, it's great that we overcame it and built up a website that pleased both ourselves and readers alike. (by Yvette)
