Treatment of Stray Dogs in Taiwan

(by Yvette)

When people see a stray dog, they can call the Animal Protection and Epidemic Prevention Department (the phone number depends on the county or city). The dog-catcher will rush to the scene after receiving the notification and capture the dog after confirming that the dog meets the reported specimen. When capturing, they try to approach stray dogs in a gentle manner so that they do not feel threatened and attack the captors. The dog capture tools include dog nets, trap cages, dog collars, leather ropes, dog catch poles, etc. These tools are all designed to prevent causing harm to the dog. The captured stray dogs will then stay in the shelter and get scanned to see if they have owners. The dogs with owners will then be temporarily housed in a separate area while waiting for their owners to be notified and arrive to get them.

In the shelter, all stray dogs are housed in separate pens. Each pen will be numbered and clearly marked with the information of the dog in question. This includes the dog number, coat color, gender, capture date and time. During the preliminary categorization, the dogs will be inspected based on their appearance. This allows the shelter to be able to differentiate the sick and the healthy. Unhealthy dogs will be isolated from healthy dogs and kept separate individually. Healthy dogs are also housed in individual pens. If the dog is sick in the shelter, a veterinarian will be summoned to treat it. If the veterinarian declares that it is seriously ill, infected with a contagious disease, or any other emergency, it will be put down humanely. However, if the dog has an owner, the owner will be notified first before any procedure is taken or decided upon.

The Stray Dog Association has entrusted animal hospitals, famous groups or online advertising entities to encourage everyone to adopt. In addition, in order to increase everyone's willingness to adopt stray dogs, municipal governments will also strengthen the assessment to guarantee good dog adoption quality. These strengthened procedures include the screening and sorting of stray dogs through the help of animal hospitals or non-governmental organizations, selecting more docile dogs, and then organizing various events or online promotions, and, finally, providing incentive supporting measures (such as free sterilization, registration, vaccination, etc.).
