We wanted to share with our readers why we chose these specific themes for the 1st Edition of TMC.

Memorial Day was preceded by Decoration day, celebrated first on May 30, 1868, three years after the end of the Civil War. In 1966, the Congress and President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, NY as the 'birthplace" of Memorial Day.

“We do not know one promise these men made, one pledge they gave, one word they spoke; but we do know they summed up and perfected, by one supreme act, the highest virtues of men and citizens. For love of country they accepted death, and thus resolved all doubts, and made immortal their patriotism and their virtue.

Memorial Day and Poppies

Wearing poppies to honor the fallen soldiers is traditionally done on Memorial Day. The practice of wearing poppies was inspired by the poem "In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae. He was a soldier, physician and, poet during World War I.

In Flanders Fields

by John McCrae, May 1915

In Flanders fields, the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.
