PhD in Health & Sport Pedagogy

In the Health and Sport Pedagogy emphasis of the doctoral program, students may select to focus their studies and research in the area of adapted physical education. The doctoral program is designed to prepare individuals for academic positions in departments of physical education/ kinesiology at universities and colleges. Research, scholarship, and leadership opportunities are emphasized throughout the program. Upon completion of the program, individuals will be prepared to assume leadership positions in the fields of physical education and adapted physical education.

This is an intensive research oriented program designed to prepare scholars to work in higher education institutions. Doctoral students can identify areas of interest within HPE and APE to pursue. A successful candidacy exam and dissertation is required for completion. 


**2022-2027**

Preparation of Leadership Personnel in Adapted Physical Education Grant Opportunity

The faculty at Old Dominion University, in collaboration with faculty at the University of Utah and University of Georgia, have been selected to receive funding from the Office of Special Education, U.S. Department of Education to train doctoral students in the area of adapted physical education. This funding will support tuition, stipends, and conference travel funds for doctoral students from 2022 to 2027. Doctoral scholars will have the opportunity to participate in a nation-wide, multi-site consortium focused on doctoral training in adapted physical education, with a home base at Old Dominion University.
