tendon injuries

Tendon avulsions are very common in sportsmen involved in cricket, baseball and football. Most common injury is the Mallet finger where extensor tendon takes off a chip of the phalanx at the attachment and patient is no longer able to extend the distal inter-phalangeal joint. Exactly opposite to this is the jersey finger where the patient has an avulsion injury to the flexor tendon and leads to a permanent loss of flexion.

Less common are tendon interstitial ruptures or traumatic laceration due to sharp injury. These typically need surgical intervention in all cases to regain function completely. Post surgical recovery enormously depends on the physiotherapy and rehabilitation. Usually there is a complete functional recovery with no loss of strength.
