Prolapsed Disc or a herniated disc usually presents with predominant symptoms pertaining to a nerve compression. Patient might complain of numbness, loss of motor power, tingling and difficulty bending forwards. Weight lifting and atheletic activity might predispose these patients to worsen with regards to both back pain and radiculopathy. Symptoms usually depend on the grade of herniation which may be mild to severe.

Basic cause in most cases is a un-supervised training or supra-physiological loading of spine, acute back ache and associated symptoms settle usually with conservtive treatment and rest. Athletes should take special precautions and care regarding pre-conditioning and cool down before indulging in athletic activities.

Degenerative spine disease is a broad spectrum term encompassing problems pertaining to Disc, Intervertebral Joints, Ligaments and the structural column itself. Degenerative disc disease pertains to wear of the intervertebral disc and changes in its sturcture and function.

PIVD, LCS, Facetal joint pathology, Listhesis and ligamentous hypertrophy are few major reasons of a degenerative spine problem. Usually seen in athletes involved in weight lifting and contact sports. A combination of these usually exists and is difficult to treat with only conservative maangement. Patients need life style modifications along with therapy and rehabilitation to lead a symptom free life. Surgical modality remains the choice of treatment in resistant cases.
