Meniscus surgery

Menisectomy

Meniscii are supporting cushions of the knee which serve functions of equal distribution of load and act as shock absorbers in the knee. The main force behind injury usually remains a twisting injury to the knee in a semi-flexed condition. This leads to the catching-up of the meniscus in between the two bony structures resulting in a tear of the meniscus.

The usual symptoms include an inability to squat, sit cross-legged or climb staircase and severe pain and locking sensation on deep flexion of the knee. The mainstay of the treatment depends on the morphology and extent of the tear. In cases where mechanical symptoms are caused by a more central bucket handle tears, it is advisable to undergo a partial or sub-total meniscetomy to prevent cartilage changes and further damage to the knee.

The procedure involves use of arthroscopic technique to identify the tear morphology and treat with balancing/removal of the part causing mechanical symptoms. The patient is allowed full weight bearing and knee bending from second day of surgery. Please consult our orthopedic team for more information on your query.
