Future Impact

Students

Over the course of this inquiry project, students were able to connect with both their own personal stories and Indigenous stories in an authentic and artistic way. We moved past the learning of Indigenous concepts and got to an understanding of the cultural importance of why it is important to share a variety of cultures in the drama classroom.

School Impact

I intend to share my performance recordings with other humanities teachers so they can show students when they discuss Indigenous content, they have a connection to peers and the cultural storytelling tradition.

This is also the first time Indigenous content has ever been integrated into drama in the 30 years my TM has been leading the program. I have left him comfortable leading the 7 Grandfather teachings and integrating Indigenous ideas into his own performance.

Personal Learning

At first, I felt a lot of trepidation around how to bring Indigenous content in the right way. This inquiry project helped me to feel competent and confident in integrating Indigenous content into the drama classroom. Instead of being afraid of doing things the wrong way, this process has given me a sense of humility and an awareness of how to implement diverse topics into my classroom to make sure every student is able to see themselves in drama.
