Mission of the project

The project was created to give drama teachers resources and techniques to bring Indigenous concepts into the classroom.

Essential Questions

  • What indigenous beliefs could infused in the drama classroom?

  • What indigenous values could infused in the drama classroom?

  • Where might they be taught in the drama classroom?

  • How might they be used in the drama classroom?

  • What should a teacher avoid doing/using when infusing Indigenous culture in the drama classroom?

  • What might be some things to keep in mind when working with Indigenous beliefs and values in the drama classroom?

It is evident from this questionaire that drama teacher need more support and resources in order to feel more confident and have the resources to practically bring Indigenous content into the classroom.

Things to consider when implenting

Appreciation vs Appropriation

When creating art there is always the question to ask of appreciation vs appropriation. Having humility and respect will be necessary to implement this unit.

Theatre history

History has a very colonial past. Popular plays often come from dead white men. Implementing FMNI artists into the new Canadian canon helps to diversify, what can be a very eurocentric program.

Truth and Reconcillation

In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation committee of Canada made a call for action for educators.

62. We call upon the federal, provincial, and territorial governments, in consultation and collaboration with Survivors, Aboriginal peoples, and educators, to:

i. Make age-appropriate curriculum on residential schools, Treaties, and Aboriginal peoples’ historical and contemporary contributions to Canada a mandatory education requirement for Kindergarten to Grade Twelve students.

iii. Building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect

Indigenous Perspectives

When completing an Indigenous unit, conscious effort must be demonstrated in making sure storytelling is not done for Indigenous leaders.

-Listening to Indigenous student's and Artists' voices will add validity and insight into your curriculum.
