Citations

How do I cite images from the web?

If you borrow an online image to use in a project, then you are required to cite your source (in other words, you need to acknowledge and give credit to the owner of that image).

To cite an online image (graphic, picture, map, photo), you can use the following simplified format:

Description or title of image. [Online image]   Date retrieved. <URL>.

EXAMPLE:

Original Thirteen Colonies. [Online image]  March 23, 2019. <http://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/namerica/usstates/colonies.gif>.

Where do I put my image citation?

Typically, it is best to give the citation right next to or underneath the image.

In a project, you may need to give the citations at the end of the presentation in a kind of bibliography or citations page.

How do I make sure I have the correct URL for my citation?

If you are using Google Images in Chrome, select the image you want, then right-click and choose 'Copy Image Address.'

What does an incorrect image URL look like?

Too often, students think the Google Images URL that appears at the top of the browser once they have clicked on the image is the correct one. If your copied URL looks something like this, then you have not followed the instructions above and have selected the wrong URL:

http://www.google.com/imgres?q=atahualpa&um=1&hl=en&client=firefox-a&sa=N&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&biw=1366&bih=622&tbm=isch&tbnid=KY2aeBHrY2DAfM:&imgrefurl=http://assassinscreed.wikia.com/wiki/File:48-535-1532captura_atahualpa.jpg&docid=sUkq7_6i5n6CeM&w=275&h=240&ei=0CiOTt-UIM2WiQfJiqH0DQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=554&vpy=149&dur=733&hovh=192&hovw=220&tx=147&ty=93&page=1&tbnh=132&tbnw=151&start=0&ndsp=24&ved=1t:429,r:3,s:0
