Extinction

Evidence of Work

Diego Alfaro-Pando - Extinction Project
Extinction Project Script
Extinction Podcast.mp3

For this project, we were tasked with researching endangered species. This involved 8 general questions for the research portion, and 4 slightly more specific questions that we had to answer in our final project. We chose to do a podcast due to the simplicity, and also due to us being limited in options due to the statewide quarantine. This project required us to assess the risk factors for extinction, and conclude whether or not our species of choice (dugongs) would go extinct.

Content

  • Mass extinction

    • When more species go extinct than normal

    • By finding causes of different extinctions, we can slow our current mass extinction

  • Extinction

    • When all individuals in a species are dead, and the species ceases to be

    • Understanding extinction could help prevent some of them

  • Habitat

    • Where a population lives

    • By understanding how human activity affects habitats, we can try to prevent damage

  • Biodiversity

    • Diversity within a species

    • The smaller a population gets, the less biodiversity it keeps, increasing chance of extinction-level disease

  • Reproduction

    • The preservation of a species through the creation of a new generation

    • If reproduction is impaired in a species, they are more susceptible to extinction

  • Ungulate

    • A common ancestor

    • Helps us understand where a species evolved from

  • Subungulate

    • Descendants of a common ancestor

    • Helps us understand where a species evolved to

  • Gestation

    • Carrying a baby in the womb

    • An important part of reproduction, longer gestation periods slow a species' reproduction

Reflection

Despite my absence on the first day of the project, my partner and I were able to Communicate about what animal we should do our project on. Also, I was a Conscientious Learner while doing research for our podcast.

However, this project was slightly limiting in what it could demonstrate. Therefore, I was unable to demonstrate Cultural Competence and Critical Thinking. This project just had no connection to culture, and did not require very much thinking, as it was merely gathering information and putting into a desired format.
