Religion, Ethics and Philosophy

In Religion, Ethics and Philosophy (REP) we learn about religions and we learn from religions. In Year 7, you studied the world religions - founders, teachings, from people living in our local community and the world - to equip you with awareness and knowledge in order to break down barriers of prejudice. In Year 8, you reflected using your higher skills of analysis, you approached REP through themes of Religion and Politics, Religion and Science and Moral Philosophy, asking existential questions and seeing religion in the social world in which you live. In Year 9, you are studying your REP GCSE, Christian and Muslim beliefs and practices. This forms the foundation for your Year 10 GCSE thematic course on topics such as Religion and Life, covering abortion, animal rights and Peace and Conflict, and analysing Just War theory and Lesser Jihad.

What skills will I develop from REP?

You will learn large amounts of content, select relevant ideas and use these in support of and against a statement. This means you will develop the following skills:

  • To create a well-argued response, and reasoned consideration of different points of view

  • Logical chains of reasoning leading to judgement(s) supported by knowledge and understanding of relevant evidence and information

  • To make references to religion and apply this to the issue

  • Clear and logical thinking

  • Critical evaluation

  • Literacy and expression

  • Negotiation

What subjects go with REP?

REP will support the study of English, History, Politics, Economics and Geography, and the Social Sciences - Sociology and Psychology - at A Level.

Applied and work-related learning

There is a range of vocational qualifications (such as BTECs, NVQ/SVQs and diplomas) linked to religious studies, including:

  • travel and tourism

  • health and social care

  • childcare

  • uniformed public services

  • legal studies

Apprenticeships

There are some apprenticeships associated with religious studies such as:

  • arts, media and publishing, e.g. exhibition guide, visitor services support

  • leisure, travel and tourism, e.g. tourist guide, travel adviser

  • health, public services and care, e.g. community support worker

  • education and training, e.g. learning support assistant

What degree can I study with REP A Level?

REP A-Level is valuable for studying degrees in any of the above A Level course as well as Journalism, Law, Social Anthropology, Media.
