English

The English Department at St Marylebone School teaches in a way that will develop a love of the English language and its literature in all students. As well as sharing with the students all that the world of literature has to offer, we encourage them to develop the skills necessary to respond critically to the information that will be presented to them throughout their lives, and to communicate as effectively as possible through both the spoken and the written word.

At the end of the rigorous two year course students will receive two GCSEs:  English Language and English Literature, with a Spoken Language Endorsement Certificate from the AQA Exam Board. We study a variety of enriching and engaging texts - from Shakespeare to 19th century classics, modern prose to poetry, fiction to non-fiction. We endeavour to explore spoken and written works from a diverse range of voices, cultures and experiences, discuss topical issues relevant to society today, encourage students to consider others’ viewpoints and empower them with the skills to confidently express their ideas.

The skills developed in English are:

Students who love English will often pursue careers in Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, Law, Publishing and, of course, frequently become writers themselves.

However, communication is at the heart of almost every profession! The many skills you’ll develop in this subject are transferable to all careers and are prized by many employers. Doctors must adapt their language so that a patient understands their diagnosis. Scientists have to write reports in a clear, logical and detailed manner. Computer programmers will evaluate the behaviour and motivations of their target audience before creating an app. Entrepreneurs must rely on their creativity and imagination when marketing their brand. No matter what career path you choose, you can be sure that English will provide you with valuable skills and knowledge to succeed.

If you do well in the subject you’ll have the opportunity to continue studying English at 6th Form and beyond. Many sixth form colleges and A Level courses require students to achieve a Level 5 or above in GCSE English Language and Literature.
