Maths
The GCSE Mathematics course is designed to be able to equip all students with not only the essential everyday mathematical skills but also to deepen their understanding of Mathematics ahead of a wide and varying range of careers. The course covers the essential 4 areas of Mathematics: Number, Algebra, Geometry, and Data, and develops students problem-solving ability, a skill that is widely desired across all jobs.
It often surprises many students how often Maths crops up into their other subjects. Traditional routes of Accountancy, Financial Sector, Medicine, and Engineering require a mathematical degree. Other subjects such as Biology, Psychology, and Geography also contain a strong mathematical component, with the need for the ability to analyse and infer from data.
The GCSE course serves to equip all students with the skills to be able to pursue any of their desired careers. From theatre to lifeguard, from architect to gardener, baker to banker, medical researchers to computer game designers - Maths is used in every career.
The skills that are developed in Maths are:
Numeracy - the ability to work with numbers
Problem solving - approaching tasks in a logical and creative way, gathering information and processing it correctly
Data analysis - the ability to use diagrams and charts to look for patterns and trends in data
Logical thinking - being able to communicate your thoughts and findings in a clear way to others.
Geometry - the ability to use space in a logical way, using shapes and angles and trigonometry
Perseverence - trying several things before coming to the right solution
After GCSE, there is the opportunity to study Maths and Further Maths at A Level. Getting a good grade at GCSE opens up this opportunity. Many Sciences (both physical and social) may require a good GCSE grade.
