Censorship Resources

Intellectual Freedom News is a free weekly compilation of news by the American Librarian Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom which provides weekly news digests of current book challenges in libraries, articles about privacy, internet filter and censorship, ways to get involved, and more. 

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's  Legal Defense Fund has compiled a Critical Race Theory Questions and Answers webpage that explores how censorship of CRT fits into a larger effort to suppress voices, history, and political participation of Black Americans.  

The National Coalition Against Censorship is an alliance of national non-profits, including literary, artistic, religious, educational, professional, labor, and civil liberties groups, that have engaged in direct advocacy and education to support First Amendment principles.

The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of the First Amendment rights of the comics art form and its community of retailers, creators, publishers, librarians, and readers. 

Legislation of Concern in 2024

EveryLibrary is monitoring state legislation during the 2024 session that would limit Americans' freedom to read and think for themselves. Of most concern are proposed laws that would allow for criminal prosecution of librarians, educators, higher ed. faculty, and museum professionals.

These resources from NCAC offer useful tips and strategies for students, artists and any activists seeking to drive social change through civic engagement.   

NCAC’s Youth Free Expression Program and Kids’ Right to Read Project database of K-12 student censorship incidents includes book challenges in schools and libraries, as well as censorship of student art, journalism, and other types of student expression in schools.

CBLDF Discussion Guides are tools that can be used to lead conversations about challenged graphic novels and to help allay misconceptions about comics.  Guides include a synopsis, themes, reasons challenged, discussion questions and activities.

The ALA has compiled summaries of frequently cited First Amendment cases: the Supreme Court of the United States, the Court of Appeals of different Federal circuits, the District Court of several Federal districts, as well as the highest court of several states and particular appellate courts of action.
