2020 - Central Saint Martins Foundation Course Project

I purchased this book from the PaperPlus store in the Eastridge Mall. I love this shop, because it has such an exciting range of books, this one for example.

This was an exercise in Material Value. The choice of material can be influenced by matters of practicality, process or tradition. New approaches to materiality can transform the way you engage with art and design. Manipulate unconventional materials to create a challenging multisensory result.

This is my 'velvet ribbon rippling over a wooden cube'. It is challenging how we read both the wooden block and the velvet ribbon, in terms of its aesthetic, meaning or use.

Exploring 'Image and Narrative'. My result in working with the letter P. I was to craft a compelling visual narrative.

Body and Form. Design a silhouette or structure that will be worn o n the body and is inspired by the built environment.

I used Te Papa as my built environment, and ended up focusing on the logo as my inspiration...can you believe it. I will create my design one day, all wavy and curly.

Language and Interaction required designing and testing a strategy for engaging and interacting with a public audience. I chose a quote and this is my plan. Didn't test it 'in situ', but showed people my plan and they expressed a positive response.

Time to specialise...Fashion and Textiles for me, and I had to take inspiration from the material CORDUROY. That was interesting.

My outcome came out a delightful story from Eric's childhood concerning his brand new bedford cords.

"When he was 9 or 10 years old, Little Eric lived in the village of Mostyrn in Wales. He went out to play in the paddock one day, wearing his new pair of bedford cords. While climbing through a fence he caught himself on barb wire or a staple and tore the left leg, inside thigh of his new bedford cords. Little Eric knew he was going to be in deep shit with his mum, 'cos he didn't have many trousers and they were not a well off family! So, he goes back to the cottage and carefully spread the trousers out on the arm of the armchair, got a needle and thread and began to sew up the triangular shaped tear. When finished Little Eric thought he made a pretty neat job. "Mum will be pleased" thought Little Eric. Feeling much better Little Eric picked his bedford cords up from the arm of the chair, and ripped the material on the armchair. He'd sewed the bedford cords to the armchair! Oh no, it's double deep shit now!!

I am working through my last project, my own brief, and thus far I have titled it 'Nurture the Needy'. A work in progress. Images yet to come.

Nurture the Needy, the great Mother Earth Goddess, who sustains all.
