Pamela, 54, was sightseeing with partner John when she fell ill and began hallucinating in the 90 degree heat, an inquest heard.

they became lost and decided to follow the signs in the opposite direction. But it soon became clear that Miss Plant was struggling.

'Pamela started to hallucinate and so I carried her bags and helped her along. It all came on very quickly, she wanted to go but was struggling. She then collapsed.

'I found a tree with some shade and sat her underneath it. I poured some water over her to keep her cool and gave her my hat which was bigger than hers and went looking for help.'

East Lancashire Coroner Mr Richard Taylor recorded a verdict of misadventure. He said: 'What should have been an exciting trip sadly ended in tragedy. You have my sympathy for that.'
