Features of Comfortable Clothes for very hot weather. For travel or where you live.
A scene from the tropics
I came back to my accommodation around noon. In the air conditioned reception sat two foreigners. They asked, "Have you been out in this heat and sunshine? It's over 100 F, 38 F!" Yes, no problem. I walked 20 minutes along the river to a restaurant. They had a stand fan, otherwise I had been too hot there. On the way back I did some shopping. All the time I was perfectly comfortable, only wet from transpiration on the lower back.
I checked their clothes. Wrong quality, colors, design and they way they wore them. I said: Buy my reports guys! They haven't yet. They still spend the days indoors!
For trousers, skirt and shirt I have listed some 20 features for design and material for greater comfort in hot weather. How many can you suggest?
Report advice goes far beyond the common advice: "loosely fitted clothing and a hat".
With this dress, especially in a bit of wind, you really feel the increased ventilation over the skin.
I once was in quite cold weather and had to disable the main ventilation feature.

You can get uncomfortably hot. Or you can get a life threatening heat or sun stroke. Risks are higher for old citizens.
We have only one process in hot weather which prevents us from becoming uncomfortable or at the worst fatally overheated.
When
buying/ordering clothes you must know what to look for to get what
makes the most of this process and thus keeps you as cool as possible.
If
your discomfort from high temperature is extreme you may have to cancel
your outdoor plans. With the right clothes you increase your
temperature tolerance upwards.
From very hot weather, 104 F, 40C, down to some 61 F,16 C .

Mesh shirts is one way to go to stay cool - but social concerns may limit their use. Mesh bras can help ladies to stay cooler.

There are,
e.g., for trousers, some 12 features and type of materials listed that
makes them cool. How many can you suggest? Plus some 15 other points of
relevant information.
Including guards against pick pockets, which very few travelers have, and razor blade artists.
The trousers have big side and leg pockets, inside or outside.
Also when I am at my residence I prefer trousers with big pockets. It
is so convenient, hands free!, to put you shopping or extra clothes in
them.
Most of the features of the trousers can also be applied to skirts.
|
When
you know what to look for you can find quite good ready made cool
clothes. Some modifications to make them still cooler is quite easily
done. For optimal cool clothes they probably have to be tailor made.
|
Too many
westerners walk around in the tropics in their temperate climate dress.
It is about as wise as a Greenlander using his -30 C, -22 F, fur dress
when temperature is well above freezing.
Excerpt from report: Underwear is a very recent
invention in the history of mankind - maybe only a parentheses if the
planet gets hotter. Perhaps only polar explorers will use them in the
future.
|
The tropics are hot - many times unbearably hot. Make the best of it with the right gear!
Comfort in hot weather is a function of clothes, accessories, knowledge how to use them and techniques.
Visiting the tropics without the right gear is like turning up a Formula 1 car race in a standard car.
Underwear
You have probably worn underwear for as long as you can remember.
|
I guess you are planning to continue this habit in the tropics. But do you know why you use under wear?
Uncomfortably hot? - non attractive company!
Say your
face is dripping with sweat and the shirt is totally wet from
perspiration. You meet a nice person of the opposite sex. You would
probably make a better first impression if you were a bit cooler.

The finer points of staying cool
Staying as cool as possible is not only a matter of clothes and
accessories it can mean a difference where you chose to walk in a city
and how your umbrella is positioned relative to your body.

Forced ventilation - Personal Air Conditioner
I have
tried forced ventilation. A battery powered fan on my back under the
shirt. It didn't get beyond the indoor testing phase. There are some
safety concerns. Say the fan gets blocked, maybe the motor catches fire
under the shirt - could be embarrassing to say to say the least.
I haven't
given up. Let's see what the future can bring. There are personal air
conditioners. But just a fan is much lighter, cheaper and requires far
less energy.

Every little step in the right direction makes you a bit cooler!
Buy now!
It will take time to get your gear in order. Content of report lasts a lifetime!
You can use this information when buying ready made clothes. Then possibly modifying them a bit to make them better.
Or,
for probably a better result, have an affordable tailor making them for
you. In inexpensive countries tailors are affordable for most western
travelers. You use the information in the report to instruct the tailor
about the important features.

I think we have it in the genes: Take as much as you can! Don't discard anything!
| Sure e g, when man set out to cross an
unknown mountain, millenniums ago and until today, it was wise to bring
what might come handy. In many cases it was life saving. |
The natural selection has seen to it that those who traveled with too little luggage died earlier and left less offspring. |
To act against the genes is not easy.
First time I traveled with only one pair of trousers it was not an easy decision.
|
Also if you have something with you which
you don't expect to use during the rest of you trip I think most people
have difficulties to part with it: give it away, throw it away, or send
it home by mail. |
So I suggest: Bring just what you really need!
If it rains a lot there are umbrellas to buy. If it is cold there
are nice local sweaters for sale - can be a nice souvenir. If there is
diarrhea there are antibiotics. Etc.
Every little step in the right direction makes you a bit cooler!
