Mottled Owl - Hidalgo Co., February 23, 1983. One (TBRC# 1988-18, TPRF #377) found dead along the side of the road near Bentsen State Park, Hidalgo on 23 February 1983 (DHi). This record made two circulations through the TBRC and the question of the origin of the bird was thoroughly discussed. Several committee members expressed some concern that the bird might have been accidentally transported to the U.S. in the grill of a vehicle and dropped to the pavement in Texas. In the end, however, the committee voted to accept the record. The species occurs in the wild within about 80 miles of the Texas border. This represents the first Texas and first U.S. record.
