We need a strong showing to send a clear message we will not allow our future generations to be limited to a roads only future in Northland. So please all available group members and friends show up in support. We have an outstanding line-up speaking to submissions, presenting power point displays and providing a business case. Banners, signs welcome, we also have tee shirts printed available to wear- both Grow Northland Rail & Rail Link to the Port.

Established in 2007/08, the purpose of this rate was to fund activities relating to the development of regional infrastructure projects, starting with the Marsden Point Rail Link. The rate was set for two years in our Long Term Plan to provide for further decision making by central government regarding the rail link.
The future of the rail link is unclear, and council is awaiting further direction from central government before reconsidering the purpose of the rate. Rolling the rate over for a further year will allow time for any required investigations. Council will then put forward options in the Long Term Plan and consult on what infrastructure investments the rate is best spent on.
In mid-March 2016 it was revealed that KiwiRail was not planning to renew its contract with Marasumi Woodchip carting logs from the railhead at Otiria to their plant at Portland, south of Whangarei. ( Listen to this Radio NZ report ) Also to be discussed is the proposed/designated/consented Oakleigh-Marsden Point Link

The train will start its journey from the Ellerslie station at 7am and travel over through the suburbs of the western districts and on into the isolated and beautiful country that surround the North Auckland Line. The train has a buffet car where you can purchase light refreshments during the journey and on arrival in Whangarei at 2pm you will have ample time to explore the city before our 5pm departure.

Adults: $190. Children (2-14 years) $98. Family (2 Adults - 2 Children) $498. Station stops are Ellerslie, Newmarket, Morningside, Mount Albert, Henderson, Swanson, Helensville, Wellsford.
Please Note: If you are boarding at Ellerslie Station there is construction work taking place to install a new foot bridge.You may have to access the station via the subway off Sultan Street which comes off Kalmia Street. Signage is in place to direct you to the station.We advise arriving at least 20 minutes before the advertised departure time to give yourself enough time to get onto the station.

Viv Shepherd and Moea Armstrong opened the packed out meeting of approximately 120 people at 7p.m.
Vaughan Cooper, Growth and Infrastructure Manager for the Northland Regional Council spoke on aspects of our 30 year Transport Strategy for Northland.

Teresa Moore presented her business case study here. for the North Auckland Line which you can look at based on Kelvin Taylor's' 'Turning the Northland Rail Network into a Sustatianable Business.'
Teresa Moore is the Green Party Candidate for the Rodney Electorate through which the railway passes Te Hana, Wellsford, Helensville and Kumeu on its way to Auckland.
Iain Hill KiwiRail General Manager Freight,spoke on the Turnaround Plan High Cube Containers on Low Rider wagons to get through these tunnels.

Kelvin Davis, Labour party spokesman on Tourism and Lynette Stewart, Labour's candidate for Northland reiterated Labour's support for retaining and improving rail in Northland.
Rick Bazely, Green Party candidate for Whangarei spoke briefly and mentioned the 2010 Bolland Report providing independant advice on the costs and benefits of rail vs road for freight transport and the 2009 Ministerial report on Oil Prices and Resilience in the transport sector which we have had released under the Official Information Act.
Bob Scott, a property owner threatened with the bulldozing of the proposed Puhoi-Wellsford motorway extension through his land, spoke on how long this project is now likely to take.
Ken Goodhue, candidate for Democrats for Social Credit , spoke on some of the reasons why funding for the Marsden Link to NorthPort has not (yet) been granted.
A member of the public questioned why there was no emphasis being given to using Northland's railway lines for passenger transport.
Alan Preston questioned the2009 Northland Region Council's 30 year transport plan's lack of a mention of resilience - with regard to the May 2011 announcement by the International Energy agency that governments urgently need to reduce their vulnerability to increasing oil prices.
The meeting closed at about 9 p.m.
Save Our Rail Northland has submitted an application to the Charities Commission to become a charitable trust.

Day of National Significance

Save Our Rail Northland met in Whangarei created a human railway at Mander Park in Whangarei ( to highlight both the selling of that park for road widening and the proposed dismantling of the North Auckland and Dargaville railway lines ).

- the Save Kapiti group staged a March on Parliament against the motorway of 'National' significance that is being bulldozed through their 'Community of National Significance'. See what's actually planned for the day here.
Other groups such as the Rail and Marine Transport Union will be sending photos of groups of themselves with placards to MPs.
These are just a couple of examples of ideas activities that we can carry out wherever we happen to be at mid-day on the 6th of July 2011.

The Federation of Rail Organisations New Zealand will be holding their annual conference at Shantytown, Greymouth
Saturday 28th May 2011. Northlander Passenger Steam Train Auckland to Whangarei return.
Save Our Rail Northland and supporters gathered at Whangarei Train Station at 2.45 to meet the Mainline Steam train as it arrived from Auckland to hand more that 5,000 signatures on the Save the Auckland to Northland Rail petition to David Clendon of the Green Party who was arriving with CR Aaron Edwards from the Whangarei District Council who had also travelled from Auckland.
