Some are still operational, others have been out of action for varying lengths of time.

The Okaihau Branch is the northernmost section of Northland's railway network and was operational between 1923-1987.

The Opua Branch is partially used by the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway, which runs tourist services between Kawakawa and Taumarere.

The Dargaville Branch which runs from Waiotira south of Whangarei, to Dargaville

The Donnelly's Crossing section ( northward from Dargaville ) has been closed since 1959.
