1. Dire Day
On Friday July 13th 2012, as part of a general Lemony Snicket promotion, HarperCollins gave away five thousand copies of The Bad Beginning. The books were stacked in public locations in major cities for passersby to take and were shipped to teachers and librarians across the country for local distribution. The books included a special cover sticker instructing readers to "Have A Dire Day" and were accompanied by black tote bags that read, "Have A Dire Day 7.13.12 Books will fall. #DireDay".
