There's Something About July

July has been a momentous month for women in American history.

On July 19-20, 1848, our first woman’s rights convention, Seneca Falls, was held. Organized by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott, it produced the “Declarations of Rights and Sentiments” that demanded women’s rights, including the right to vote.

On July 4, 1876, a few women’s rights activists crashed the nation’s Centennial at Independence Hall in Philadelphia. Susan B. Anthony and Matilda Jocelyn Gage handed the “Declaration of Rights of Women” to both Senator Thomas Ferry, who was presiding at the celebration, and to the audience.

On July 2, 1964 Title VII of the Civil Rights Act took effect to prohibit employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin.

So it seems quite fitting that NOW’s 2013 National Conference spans the July 4 weekend. We await the new officers and resolutions that will be passed to set our agenda for the future.
