Pasco County NOW has voted to recommend placing Frances Perkins on the $10 bill. The organization made the decision after considering sixteen prominent US women.

The first female cabinet member, Perkins was also the first Secretary of Labor. She served in FDR’s administration and was the force behind much New Deal legislation. She authored the Social Security Act and established the minimum wage, Federal child labor laws, and unemployment insurance.

Pasco County NOW President Elaine Togneri noted, “Frances Perkins truly demonstrated what a difference women can make when they are included in the political process. We encourage women to run for office and ensure that our government represents all its citizens.”

Treasury Secretary Lew is asking the public to weigh in on which woman should be honored on the $10 bill and the results of the discussion were tweeted to #theNew10.

In addition, Pasco NOW voted to support the womenon20’s effort to replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill with Harriet Tubman.

Pasco County NOW is a local chapter of the National Organization for Women. The chapter celebrated its 25th anniversary last year. Its goal is to take action through intersectional grassroots activism to promote feminist ideals, lead societal change, eliminate discrimination, and achieve and protect the equal rights of all women and girls in all aspects of social, political, and economic life.
