Stonewall and Beyond

In 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, a police raid and the ensuing riots started the fight for LGBTIA rights. For the last decade, the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation has been asking to have the site designated a historical landmark. The Landmarks Preservation Committee is considering this and voted on June 2 to start the process with a public hearing. The Inn is on Christopher St. in the Historic District. Although it is a tourist attraction, it’s also a gathering place during key LGBTIA rights decisions. Recognition of its place in the fight for equal rights for all is well deserved and a long time in coming.
