qa-answered

PLEASE SCROLL DOWN -- I'm too lazy to move the new stuff to the top, and resequence everything!

This page consolidates questions answered by Steven's cousin KC Naegle, as of Jan 20, 2010 (and onward). Previous to that date, q&s were done informally on the WS site. See pages qa-01 and qa-02 for those.

Jan 20, 2010:

Gregg Webb: Did he and Steven know each other, before Steven started going to the Bloomington 17th? I doubt it

The passport being missing: is that THE fact you were told not to reveal? Yes. I was hoping that if someone stole it from Steven they would use it and get caught. Since WS is so public I didn't want to inform "the bad guy" that we were watching for it. I welcome all your thoughts about it now. Does anyone know of a way to track passports without going through the government?

Was it current? Yes

Has it been used to leave/re-enter the US? IDK I think if LE knew that it had been used they would would be all over that angle and they don't seem to be investigating in that direction.

Did Steven normally carry his passport with him, daily or while travelling? No.

Did Steven have a Franklin Planner? If so, classic (5x8 pages) or large (full-sheet)? No

Is the "portfolio" in the security camera, similar to what Steven was known to own? Yes. Though it is probably only a dark school folder. Steven's father said he used those a lot. We also found one in his apt that was full of resumes.

4BB - Was a "be on the lookout for" issued to area hospitals, medical clinics, homeless shelters, or adult detention centers to see if the missing person has been brought to one of these facilities. I know they were asked in the beginning, but I don't know if they are particularly looking now.

4BB - Can you give us a roundabout figure that Steven has in his bank account? Yep $0.

4BB - Does Grandmother have a bank ledger stating when she wrote the check? October 6, 2009

4BB - Are there any pages you would like to scan in for us to sort out? Not yet.

4BB - Is there a video that shows any vehicles coming out of Evening Lights later? Possibly... We're looking.

4BB - Has anyone sat and talked to Mr. Security? Yes. Steven's father spent hours with him.

CONCRNED CTZN - Anthem "car patrol" left a message on Steven's cellphone, after the car was reported abandoned. Does anyone know how they got his cellphone number to leave that message? I believe that fliers from the window washing job were visable in the window of the car. Contact info for Travis(or Steven) was on the flyer and when the car patrol saw that they called him... I believe that's how it happened.

Did Steven own a gun? If so, was it found? I don't think he owned a gun.

A: There was a Fall session of the Shakespearean Festival; laytonian's error in not knowing that.

WHERE SEARCHED (Casinos)

Q: Were the casinos in Mesquite and the Vegas area contacted, to see if he had any "markers" or debts?

A: No casinos were checked. (Since none were checked, other casino questions deleted from this list)

(NOTE: in a later report, we learned that casinos were later checked)

Various questions about that employment - "don't know", may get more info later)

THE CAR

Q: When the car was found, what direction was it facing in the cul-de-sac?

Anthem? The gully/golf course? Did he pull around in the circle and face east?

Q: Did anyone take a picture (pictures) of the car, documenting everything about

it, before they entered it or it was moved? If so, can we see them?

A: The family was kind enough, during a search trip to Vegas, to park the a rental car in the same position as Steven's was found, and take pictures of it for us. Those images are on this site.

Q: How did he start the car (ie, did he have a key to it, or was it unlocked with hidden key, or what?)

A: I think Steven's dad has a key to the car or they found the spare in Steven's

room. The car was locked when they found it.

Q: Did anyone enter the car, before the police had a chance to process it?

A: Yes, because the police never processed it.

Jan 22, 2010

"Here you go! Unfortunately, no news from the trip. I'm getting good pictures for you all though."

-- KC

Q: Did Steven participate, at all, in the Proposition 8 drive in '08?

A: Nope

Q: What kind of mail has Steven received, since he disappeared?

Q: Any bills?

A: IDK He did have some automatic payments that kept going this month, but those have been investigated.

Q: Any credit card statements?

A: His credit card was one of the auto payments.

Q: Has anyone signed him up here? It might be interesting.

https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp

(That's the ONLY genuine "free credit report" website)

Q: Was Steven driving his own car, when he showed up in Ruby Valley?

A: As far as we know.

Q: Does anyone know WHO he was soliciting window-washing/Christmas light work from?

A: Probably both (Homeowners? Businesses? Both?)

Q: Has anyone contacted cab companies?

Henderson Taxi

1910 Industrial Road

Las Vegas, Nevada 89102

Phone: 702-384-2322

A: No... I'll see what I can do, but wouldn't there be phone records?

(My Reply: He could have used a pay phone)

Q: Are any taxis seen on the security video? This is what they'd look like:

Scheme #1: BLACK SKIRTING, WHITE BODY, YELLOW ROOF

Scheme #2: BLACK SKIRTING, WHITE BODY, 6” HORIZONTAL YELLOW STRIPE

A: None that we've seen so far. Particularly none on Sunday.

Q: Who are the "points of contact" (detectives) in Las Vegas, St George and Henderson?

(Noted on the missing persons posters and this timeline website)

Detective McKay is the lead in Henderson.

Jan 23-24, 2010

Good info here, plus pictures forthcoming. I'll post them when they arrive. (It may take awhile, due to Naegle's limited internet access)

A: --Yeah, Police Dogs. ;-) (aka idk)

Q: Have the runoff ponds/water lakes in the nearby golf course been checked?

A: (sorry) I know the golf course has been cheked extensivly, but I really don't know if that includes the water traps.

Q: We get pictures? Of every IHOP in Vegas, every DI, or what? ;)

A: I made the fam park our rental just like Steven's car was found and took pictures for you all. I probably won't get those out to you until tomorrow though.

A: You ask below if the phone records would show a cab.

Q: Yeah...but what if he was using a pay phone? (We can't discount that.)

A: There were no pay phones in that neighborhood so if one did pick him up it wouldn't be on Mr. Security's camera. I'll look into getting someone to call the cab companies though.

Q: What areas were searched, with ATVs/dogs/air? Near where the car was found?

A: I'm not sure about the exact area, but I believe the around the car was searched with dogs, air and ATV search the mountiains nearby, and volunteers canvassed the whole neighborhood again.

A: Also, the police plan another search soon. "To see if anything washed out with the storm." I'm trying my best to think that "anything" means his cell or wallet. =/

OTHER COMMENTS FROM NAEGLE:

We are getting more people involved and everyone is being so good to us.

Like I said in one of the other emails the police are planning another big search. We're also trying to get another LE agency involved, but apparently they don't play well together so it may be slow going.

That neighborhood is incredible! There's no way he went there randomly! Just crazy.

Jan 25-26, 2010:

Q: Going on the premise that Steven is still alive, he needed to get money from somewhere. Neagle can you find out if the family knows of any jewerly or if anything of significant value is missing? There are pawn shops and "we buy gold" places all over Vegas. I was wondering if he could have pawned something to at least have some cash to get by with. Those might be good places to show his poster to as well.

A: I'm not aware of anything like that.

Q: Do we know if when Steven was working for the window washing company and putting up christmas decorations, if he was paid by check or under the table?

A: I believe he was paid cash. He was paid just before he disappeared, but only about $100.

Q: Is there a way to get a list of who has been questioned to date so far by LE? There may not be a specific list out there, but maybe someone that LE has been updating would know.

A: I wish.

Q: Have any of the LE agencies involved given their thoughts on this case to the family. Do they believe we have an adult "Runaway" or is foul play suspected? Any indication of POI's?

A: They haven't told us anything.

Q: Is a reward being offered? I have seen this question before, but don't believe I have seen an answer.

A: Soon. I don't have details yet, but you can be sure we'll make a lot of noise when we offer the reward.

Q: Are fundraisers being set up to raise money for a reward fund, search efforts, travel and lodging, etc? Candlelight vigils? Not only will this help lend financial and emotional support to the families, but it will also keep Steven's name "top of mind." Might be a good way to keep him in the Media as well.

A: There is an account a Zion's Bank accepting donations. Please, find info on the fb discussion. We haven't set up any vigils. We're trying to get a press conference going in Vegas, but it's like pulling teeth. Anyone have any contacts that could help?

Note from laytonian:

On the subject of a "press conference": I contacted Las Vegas reporters who has written a story about Steven, told him about the problem and asked

if he could help with this. Gave him family contact email address. Will also ask websleuthers for ideas <----DONE, no response.

Q: Did Steven Golf?

A: Yes, but not a ton. There's a pic of him golfing on fb isn't there?

Q: Did any other camera views from Mr. Security catch Steven on them?

A: Nope.

Q: Saw the Craigslist post. Do we know who set it up? Who are responses going to? Any luck so far?

A: FROM WEBSLEUTHS: Believe09 did all of that, so far just spam. Will advise if anything comes in.

ta-da

Subject: Questions - Jan 27

This is the long list I told you about -- answer what you know, just leave the rest blank:

FIRST:

Q: How are the names "Koecher" and "Naegle" pronounced?

A: Koecher = Kosher, Naegle rhymes with " bagel"

INVESTIGATIVE :

Q: What's the address of the home Steven lived in, in St George?

A: 1734 Maplewood Way, St. George, UT 84790

Q: Did you take any other pictures of the neighborhood? They're interested in Evening Lights Ave, the street that the figure in the video appears to walk north on.

A: No, sorry. I will if I go again.

Q: Can you give an update (even if brief) of last weekend's trip to Las Vegas?

A: We spent a lot of time in the Ihop area. We went to the DI there, and several other stores. We looked at the abandond car wash and talked to the homeless people there. We sat at Ihop every night. (1/20 - 1/24) Every employee has a different description of this "one" guy. My family talked to LE twice. Unfortunately, I wasn't there yet, but I don't think they gave us anything new.

Q: Were you (the family) able to check the DI stores, or any other IHOPs?

A: We did check the DI near the Ihop on Flamingo, but not the others.

Q: What was Steven's email address?

A: Naegle has furnished this information; however, I (laytonian), as the family contact, have made the decision to not divulge it publicly. There are two reasons for this: (1) Steven's email account is being externally monitored and I'm sure you understand that extraneous contacts will not help this case. I know how to check online activity, and will share whatever I find to the appropriate sources. (2) There has already been a contact from someone reading online, to a family member, that I consider inappropriate. Better safe than sorry.

I'm sorry that this may make some people unhappy, but I have the interests of this case and the family in mind. I hope you understand.

Q: Does LDS have anything like Confession that Catholics have? If (a religious leader) had talked to Steven

about something in some sort of confessional setting. As long as Steven is not found, these religious leaders

might be inclined to keep quiet. But, if they know something maybe now would be the time to spill the beans.

A: Mostly answered online by LDS websleuthers.

Q: Does anyone, besides the Police, know what the answers were from residents on Evening Lights?

A: My uncle and cousins canvased the area pretty well before LE got envolved. NCMLO also had volunteers out canvasing the neighborhood. No one reported anything.

Q: Did ALL of them really see nothing?

A: Apparently

Q: Did anyone recognize him?

A: Apparently not

Q: Are they all completely clueless?

A: Or they're just not glued to their windows. If Steven was going somewhere specific he was probably on the street for 2 minutes max. That's an easy time frame to miss.

Q: Did anyone at all seem concerned about a guy disappearing on their street? I gotta ask because this isn't an area where the residents would be distrustful of the cops. I would think the residents would tell the police everything they know. I would just like to know what they said.

A: Anyone not involved probably knows nothing. If someone is involved they are lying.

PERSONAL:

Q: Sleep walking. Did he ever drive before while having an episode of sleep walking?

Q: Was there an episode of violence concerning Steven's sleepwalking?

A: Answered via email by Naegle: "Someone highlighted my word choice of "clinically" when I was answering the question about Steven's possible mental issues, particularly if he was bipolar. He wasn't. Steven's about as level mood-wise as you could get."

"Also, there's been more discussion about Steven's sleepwalking incident. I just just want to clarify that it was all talk on Steven's part. Nothing violent happened that night."

Q: Did Steven have hobbies? What were his hobbies?

A: playing guitar, wake boarding, boating, camping, watching and playing sports

Q: Favorite color?

A: ...Aquamarine. How should I know?! (If anyone quotes me out of context on this I will scream)

Q: Did he still talk to people in Brazil (not everyone stays in contact w/people from their missions)?

A: IDK

Q: Did he ever talk about his dreams, ambitions, goals?

A: Generally, he wanted to have a family and be able to support them. Specifially, one goal he had was to set up a website that compiled possible answers to "What should we do tonight?" for specific cities. That was a few years ago that he talked about that though.

Q: Was he still interested in being a journalist or communications?

A: As far as I know. I don't think he would have minded some off-shoot of that career.

Q: Was he serious? A jokester? Silly? A combo?

A: If we were one on one he was sometimes serious. In a group he was always laughing. Usually, someone else is the center of attention, but then Steven quietly inserts his very funny and clever comments. His laugh is one of the things I miss the most.

----------------

Jan 28:

Q: When is the next search scheduled? Who is organizing it?

A: I'm not sure when the search is scheduled, but the Henderson police are organizing it.

Q: Did Steven use computers at libraries or other publicly-available computers? If so, in St George, SLC, other places?

A: Yes, he used the library computers in St George.

Q: Did Steven and Jordan know each other previous to living in the same house?

A: No (per stillLooking on WS). (paraphrasing) They really didn't interact, although Steven did complain a bit to the landlord, when JRZ ate some of Steven's food (they shared the kitchen).

--------------

Jan 29:

Q: Was Steven's car paid for, or did he have payments?

A: He was still making payments.

Q: If payments - was there a co-signor?

A: No co-signor

Q: Who paid his car insurance?

A: Steven

Q: What kind of coverage? The minimum (liability), comprehensive, collision, etc?

A; I don't know but I woud guess the minimum

Q: Was Steven interested in magic?

A: No.

Q: Luggage. Is any of Steven's luggage missing?

A: No

Q: Ref the voicemail number called from Steven's phone on Dec 14th. Had he ever

dialed that number before, or was it the first time?

A: He had dialed the number before.

Q: Did Steven and Jordan know each other previous to living in the same house?

A: No.

Q: Did Steven complain to family members, about Jordan Zirkle's activities...or anything about living under the same roof with him?

A: A little. He said that he did drugs so they didn't hang out very much.

-------------------------------------

Feb 1-7:

Q: Has the passport been checked for activity?

A: Not that they've told us.

Q: Have Steven's movements/activities from Monday, Nov 30th through Friday, Dec 4th been accounted for?

A: Not that I'm aware of.

Q: Does Steven's car have two gas tanks, with one of them being "compressed natural gas" (in the trunk of the car)?

A: I believe so. The hole for the natural gas was in the back bumper so a tank in the trunk would make sense.

Q: Did Steven tell ANYONE that he was travelling, when he went to Ruby Valley?

A: Not that we've heard.

Q: What day did Steven talk to his dad about the back rent (and tell his Dad he was shopping for Groceries in WalMart at the time)?

A: 12/9/2009 I believe.

Q: Did Steven prefer a certain kind of "portfolio"? Zipped, or fold-over open style?

A: It probably wasn't a portfolio. He often used paper folders to organize things.

-------------------------------

Feb 8-14

Q: Did Steven's family visit him in St George?

A: Yes, I don't know of every time, but I do know that sometime between Oct 6 and early November his mother and Grandmother went down there and spent some time with him.

Q: Has anyone asked Detective McKay to submit Steven's case to America's Most Wanted? We Websleuthers believe it's a compelling, different case that might just get their attention. Note: it's done through the mail, via the FAQs web page on amw.com. Some of us have sent in leads on the case, but it looks like they want a full "case file". That's why we were wondering if McKay could do that.

A: I'm not sure. Believe says she's in contact with McKay. Maybe she could ask.

Note: Laytonian contacted Det McKay via email about this.

Feb 15-22

Q: When Steven came home on the evening of the 12th and left 20-30 minutes later, is there any thought that he left out of fear? Could he have found something (or someone) in the home?

A: There's nothing to point either way really. Anything's possible. I don't think so though. He was practically living there alone at that point so someone would have had to break in or something. If Steven were scared wouldn't he go somewhere closer?

Q: It's been mentioned that Steven lived in West Valley City for awhile (?).

A: Yep. He lived there about 2.5 years ago. The area was around 4100S and 2700W

Q: Between college graduation and moving to St George, did Steven live with his folks and/or have his own place?

A: Both, I believe. College grad was in 2005 so he live in West Valley and also Rose Park since then.

Q: If he had his own place before moving to St George, did he have a roommate? Name, or just description, if possible?

A: Directly before St George he was living with his parents.

Q: It's been two months. Could Steven be "stubborn" enough to purposely disappear for this long?

A: If we assume he went missing on purpose then I suppose he could disappear for as long as he wants. In my opinion the first few weeks would be the hardest. By now I'd think it'd be easy.

Q: Has he ever left before (obviously for not this long), but long enough to give him experience on how to do disappear?

A: No.

Q: Has any family member received a hang-up call....like maybe Steven was calling in, but couldn't bring himself to talk? (Yeah, overly dramatic)

A: Not that I know of.

-------------------Feb 27:

n Jan 2007, Steven wrote an article for The Clipper about "seasonal affective disorder" and in reading it, it seems very personal. He recommends a specific book, talks about a light box and interviews an inpatient psychiatrist at LDS Hospital. The photo accompanying the article is of a very pretty girl.

http://www.clippertoday.com/view/full_story/143503/article-How-to-Fight-Off-The-Winter-Blues?

Q: Important: Did Steven base this article on his specific experiences, which are common and understandable?

A: We talked to the editor and he doesn’t know except that it is a stock photo.

Q: Is it at all possible that Steven received treatment for this, or another, short-term anxiety disorder - at any time?

A: Sure, but none we're aware of.

Q: Do you know if he took that picture himself (ie, does he know that girl)? Might not hurt to talk to her?

A: It was a stock photo

Q: Any indications that Steven was recruited into a "network marketing" (MLM) business, or buying products from them?

A: There were no products like this in his apartment.

Q: Any indications that Steven was taking "natural" or "herbal" products to boost energy, promote weight loss, or even help him stay away? Lots of empty Mountain Dew (high in caffeine), Red Bull, etc, cans/bottles in the apartment or car?

A: He had mentioned that he didn’t like the way caffeine affected him so he was drinking caffeine-free stuff.

Q: An LDS websleuther asks: Since Steven attended Temple in the midst of driving back and forth from St George, any indications that Steven planned to visit other LDS temples, while travelling?

A: He was very regular about his temple attendance but he always went to the nearest temple.

Q: Was his temple clothing found at his apartment...or in the car?

A: He usually rented temple clothing.

------------------------------Answered March 1st:

Flight of fantasy idea, based on friend's FB comments about his love of the guitar but that it could "ruin his life".

Q: Did Steven play a acoustic or electric guitar?

A: Both

Q: Would he be good enough to get a job?

A: No.

Q: Did he sing well?

A: We enjoyed his singing but it wasn’t professional

Q: Could/would he possibly be a street musician?

A: Probably not. He left w/out his instruments

DOCUMENTS:

Q: We assume Steven has a current Temple recommend (right?)

A: Yes.

Q: Was it found in his room? (If not found, assuming it's in his wallet.)

A: No, it probably is in his wallet.

Q: Has it been used to enter any LDS temple (ie, scanned)?

A: We have not checked, if it is possible to.

------------------------March 2

Q: The Las Vegas Review Journal reported, after the press conference "Phone records indicate he left Utah Dec. 12, a Saturday, and arrived early the next morning." HAVE THE PHONE RECORDS BEEN RELEASED?

A: Not that we know of.

Q: Is it known if Steven has any friends who:

Pilot or own an aircraft (ie, close friend who'd fly him away somewhere)?

A: We don’t know of anyone.

Are other than members of his YSA/singles ward?

A: He didn’t have any close friends outside of the ward. He’d only been there one summer.

Own boats (other than those in the Bloomington 7th ward pictures?)

A: His older brother in Salt Lake owns a boat.

TRAVELS (was he possibly taking these odd trips for longer than the week before he disappeared)?

A: Travis felt Steven was a consistent worker so he wasn’t aware of anything like that.

Q: Do we know if there has been any other activity for Steven in the LV vicinity in the past. Bank or credit card ties to gas purchase, etc. Phone records?

A: The family is on a group bank account and his mother has never seen a vegas charge.

-----------------------------Mar 3

Q: What's a group bank account?

A: The way my aunt explained it was they all have an account with the same bank and they're linked so that they all can look at each other's bank accounts and move money around ect. Steven also has a private account that his parents don't see and he used most frequently. Yes, of course we've gone through that account as well and there weren't any vegas charges.

--------------------------Mar 4

Q: Was there anything found that would indicate Steven was starting his own business?

A: There was no evidence of Steven starting his own business. No flyers, notes, bills, I9 stuff... The flyer's in his car belonged to Travis's business.

-------------------------Asked in Jan, answered Mar 4

POLICE

Q: In this article, Rolf says that "the police" called THEM and told them the car had been found.

But it's been previously stated that it was the Anthem HOA who notified them.

A: A parking enforcement officer called about Steven’s abandoned car.

PHONE STUFF

Q: Have Steven's location(s), on the 12th and 13th, been determined (cellphone pings or anything)?

A: Steven’s phone was in Las Vegas on the 14th (voice mail)

Q: Has the specific location of the 14 Dec call from his cellphone to the voicemail, been determined?

A: Steven’s phone was in Las Vegas on the 14th (voice mail)

Q: At least one Websleuths member believes that information is available, that it would have

pinpointed the phone's location within 50 feet and wonders why it hasn't been given to the family.

A: Apparently the police have the info and can’t deciper it or the info is inconclusive.

Q: Are there GPS locations on that cell phone record list?

A: No

Q: Did he have a plug-in phone charger, in his car -- or extra batteries?

A: There was a charger at his apartment, not one in the car. We don’t know if he had more than one.

Q: What make, model of cellphone did he have. What carrier?

A: AT&T

Q: Have you tried to get the cellphone company to help?

A: Yes. They made it possible to listen to steven’s voicemail messages.

Q: Any evidence of him taking out a new credit card? (Bills might just be coming in)

A: They looked at the credit report of his open accounts and recognized all of the accounts.

Q: When was the last time Steven was in Vegas before December? Who was he with? What did he do?

A: Over five years ago he went to Vegas with his immediate family. Any other times are unknown to us.

Early March:

Naegle talked to GW; the result of that discussion is directly on the timeline, under the Dec 13th date.

Mar 17th:

Q: Is it possible to find out the addresses of the Home Depot and

Best Buy stores, where the tips came from? And any other locations?

A: I really have no idea. I don't think my aunt and uncle know specifics either. Maybe those on ws with LE contacts could ask.
