"The Master's Child"

December 1967, Coldwater, Mississippi. Bert Small holds a picture of his maternal great grandfather, Tolbert Jones, born in 1850. A former slave like three of Dr. Small's great grandparents, Tolbert Jones was the master's child. His racist white nephew became one of the governors of Mississippi.

Tolbert Jones's white neighbor shot him in the back with a shotgun, accusing him of cutting wood on the neighbor's property. Because he wanted to avenge his injuries, Jones was committed to the insane asylum in Parchman, Mississippi.
