"The Last Lion" - Dr. Small's maternal grandfather, Sam Wesley Woods

Sam Wesley Woods, lion among men and Dr. Small's maternal grandfather. Bert Small was born in his house.

Sam Woods's father, John Woods, taught him to shoot when he was around five years old. Sam learned with an old muzzle loader and was a crack shot; he could hit a nail head in a fence. One night, he put seven shots into a night rider. The Ku Klux Klan said, "Leave him alone. He's a crazy n-----; he will shoot you." Even though he was a skilled marksman, Sam refused to fight in the first World War, saying, "I don't know what I am fighting for."
