The Petaluga family

The story of a family from the Falkland Islands who were marooned in Little Shelford in World War 1 has emerged. The Petaluga family owned a cattle and sheep ranch in the Falkland Islands. They moved to Ingleside in Church Street, Little Shelford in May 1914 on a two year visa so that their children could benefit from an English education. However they were unable to return home before war broke out.Their plight was featured in the Cambridge News and Press on July 5 1918 when the 20 year-old son Earl Petaluga appeared in court, resisting the Government’s attempts to enlist him in the army. The case was dismissed and Earl returned to his role as a volunteer driver for the Army in Essex.
