Lesson plan: Real Comics Writing for P5 HCL

Class size: 25-40 pupils

Stream: Primary 5 higher Chinese

Lesson targets:

Process of the lesson

Phase one: Script writing (2 hours)

· Show examples of Real Comics to pupils. (Learning task 11: http://sites.google.com/site/gmspchinese/learning-task-11-20 )

· Teach pupils how to write a drama script. (Online examples: http://sites.google.com/site/gmspchinese/mini-drama )

· Pupils divide into groups. Each pupil assigned their own role after group discussion, e.g. director, artist, drama script writer, and photographer.

· Task:

ü Create an interesting story through group discussion.

ü Draw a comic sketch for the story.

ü Write a six-scene drama script for the story which must include action, conversation and expression descriptions. (Google docs: http://sites.google.com/site/gmspchinese/pupils-work-google-doc3-task11 )

ü Critique by teacher and other groups

Phase two: Making of Real Comics (3 hours)

· Every group is given a digital camera to take pictures for Real Comics. Each group works at different places within campus. Strict rules are given by the teacher before the groups start work.

· Pupils work in groups to make Real Comics through Google Presentations. (Final works: http://sites.google.com/site/gmspchinese/pupils-work-google-docs-2- )

· Demonstration of the group work. Suggestions are given by the teacher and other groups.

Phase three: Picture composition (2 hours)

· Each pupil writes a composition according to their Real Comic, which must include action, conversation and expression descriptions on Google docs. (Final work: http://sites.google.com/site/gmspchinese/pupils-work-google-doc-4--task-11 )

· Pupils read compositions written by others to learn writing skills, good words and sentences. They then modify their own compositions in blue colour.

· Pupils modify their group mates’ compositions in red colour and write reviews at the end of the compositions.

· After the whole critiquing process is completed, pupils post the final work in their blogs.

Phase four: Reflection (30 mins)

· Teacher creates a Google form and pupils do the feedback online. (http://sites.google.com/site/gmspchinese/feedback-for-task-11 )

Conclusion:

Positive: Targets achieved

· The final work showed that pupils had acquired the writing skills for describing action, conversation and expression.

· Most pupils agreed they had benefited in both writing skills and ICT skills.

· Pupils could complete all the tasks and showed both independent and co-operative learning.

· Pupils showed greater interest in this lesson.

Areas to improve:

· As a long term project, evaluation may be applied at each step to help pupils focus on what they should learn.

· A more detailed planning could make this project more professional.
