Discussion 15.1: Comparisons of road deaths in GSRRS and GIMD

Last Update: Feb 12th 2012

Status of discussion: Closed

This paper is a sub discussion of the broader discussion on making optimal use of police data on road injuries (see Discussion 15 Police data on road injuries).

The July 2009 Global Status Report on Road Safety (GSRRS) released by the World Health Organization contains country self-reported mortality road injuries for most countries. In this report, we compare the differences between these reported results and estimates based on death registration data that are included in the Global Injury Mortality Database (GIMD). The report is available below and by clicking here.

Where we stand and the way forward

    • Road injury deaths reported in the GSRRS have been compared with countries with good quality death registration data available from GIMD. Current results are shown in the report below.
    • Need for additional data from GSRRS: For several countries the GSRRS data was more recent than the most recent data available from GIMD. Thus comparison of the same year was not possible in many cases. However additional data (as reported in the GSRRS country profile graphs) are likely available with WHO and the data is being requested.
    • A brief discussion of current results is included in the report. However, feedback is currently being sought from members of the GBD Injury expert group and other researchers to decide implications for GBD-2005 study.
