Discussion 11.1: Comparisons of homicides reported by UNODC and death registration

Last Update: Feb 15th 2010

Status of discussion: Closed

This paper is a sub discussion of the broader discussion on making optimal use of available mortality data for the GBD-2010 study. It focuses on the availability of global data on homicides. It can be downloaded below, or by clicking here.

Where we stand and the way forward

    • We obtained cross-country data on homicides available from the UNODC Crime Trends Survey (CTS), Eurostat and Transmonee. We compared recent homicide data from CTS with estimates from death registration from the WHO Mortality Database.
    • The report can be viewed below or downloaded by clicking here.
    • A brief discussion of current results is included in the report. However, feedback is currently being sought from members of the GBD Injury expert group and other researchers to decide implications for GBD-2010 study. Please contact Kavi Bhalla (kavibhalla@gmail.com) with reactions and suggestions.
