Mapping notes

Update History:

    • Version 0: Prior to March 26 2009
      • This represented the first coding of the definitions proposed in Discussion Document 12 External Causes and Discussion Document 3 Health state definitions.
    • Version 1: March 26 2009
      • Various relatively minor inconsistencies in Version 0 have been fixed.

Notes:

    • External cause codes
      • ICD 10 is considered the "supercode." This means that code key coding is developed from ICD 10 external cause categories. For example, ICD 10 provides separate codes for car, bus, truck, and van occupants, whereas ICD 9 does not differentiate vehicle occupants.
    • Nature of Injury codes
      • JHcode refers to numerical code for each GBD sequelae state provided in the tables generated in Discussion Document 3
      • 9481 is mapped as "recode" because additional diagnoses determine its classification. If 9481 is listed with 940, 941, and 944 as additional diagnosis codes within first 3 diagnoses, the case is assigned to A5a. If 940, 941, and 944 are not present as additional diagnosis codes within the first 3 diagnoses, the case is assigned to B11. (See Nature of Inj. ICD 9&10Code Key.) This needs to be resolved in the script.
      • A3-S06 needs to be changed for ICD10CM/AM. (2) T311 and T321 are mapped as "recode" because additional diagnoses determine their classification. If either code is listed with T20 or T23 as additional diagnosis codes within first 3 diagnoses, the case is assigned to A5a. If T20 and T23 are not present as additional diagnosis codes within the first 3 diagnoses, the case is assigned to B11. (See Nature of Inj. ICD 9&10Code Key.) This needs to be resolved in the script.
