About the GBD Injury expert group

On July 14, 2007, the core team of the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) project issued an open call for expert participation in The Lancet. Several international experts expressed interest by registering on the project website.

Approximately thirty seven expert groups have been clustered together in five larger groups studying related diseases, injuries and risk factors. Each of the five clusters is directed by a cluster leader who also serves as a member of the project core team in order to ensure constant and direct communication between the core team and all expert groups. Associate Professor Theo Vos, Director of the Centre for Burden of Disease and Cost-Effectiveness at the School of Population Health, University of Queensland, is a member of the Core Team and the Cluster C leader. Cluster C comprises the various injuries, mental disorders, neurological disorders, occupational risks (risk), alcohol (risk), illicit drugs (risk), musculoskeletal diseases, osteoporosis (risk), child sexual abuse (risk) and intimate partner violence (risk) expert groups.

James Harrison and Kavi Bhalla lead the GBD injuries expert group, which currently consists of approximately 20 core members and over 150 corresponding members. The primary purpose of the expert group is to provide injury specific input to the methods used in the GBD study and verify the results by performing consistency checks. The work of the expert group is structured in discussion topics that focus on individual issues. The discussion topics are usually (but not always) lead by one or more core member of the expert group, who along with a group of co-authors produce discussion papers, periodically circulating them to corresponding members for feedback. Finalized discussion papers are fed back to the GBD central team.

In a project of this magnitude, efficient communication is essential. Typically, discussion group leaders correspond with their co-authors directly via email as they work on discussion papers. This website is periodically updated to document progress in the research. We are currently communicating using an email mailing list and working opportunistically to organize face-to-face meetings.

All members of the GBD Injury expert group are volunteers. None of the members derive any salary support from the GBD project. However, several members have ongoing research projects in closely associated areas, allowing them to contribute more substantially.

Please note that the GBD-2010 Injury expert group no longer exists.
