Countdown to Bicentennial

We wish you a safe, healthy and happy holiday!

Labor Day is a creation of the labor movement; dedicated to the social & economic

achievements of American workers.

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in

New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union.

Municipal ordinances passed in 1885 and 1886 constitute the first governmental

recognition of this holiday. New York was the first state to introduce the bill

into legislature; but, Oregon was the first to pass Labor Day into law: February 21,

1887. This was followed by legislative enactment in Colorado, Massachusetts, New

Jersey & New York. By 1890, Nebraska and Pennsylvania had also enacted the

holiday. By 1894, 23 additional states had adopted the holiday. On June 28, 1894,

Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal

holiday.
