Suffolk Shiver 2020 Report

On Saturday 25th January, Royal Hospital School hosted the Suffolk Shiver 2020 at Alton Water in Suffolk. Five under 19 teams completed three full round robins under grey skies with a force 2-3 breeze. After racing 12 races each the standings at the end of stage 1 were as follows:

1. Rutland Red – 12 wins

2. Royal Hospital School – 9 wins

3. Sevenoaks School – 6 wins

4. RGS Guildford – 2 wins

5. Rutland Green – 1 win

The event moved on to a final between Rutland Red and Royal Hospital School and a petit final between Sevenoaks School and RGS Guildford. Both ties were the first to two wins. Sevenoaks School continued their dominance over RGS Guildford, winning the petit final 2 – 0 to finish third overall.

In the final, Royal Hospital School bucked the trend of the round robin by winning the first race with a 1, 2, 3 combination following an umpire’s call at a very congested windward mark that decided the race. Rutland Red composed themselves well to win the second race with 1, 2, 6 to send the final to a deciding race.

In the deciding race it was nip and tuck the whole way around the course with all six boats racing hard and some excellent team racing on display. The result came down to the wire, being settled within a few boat lengths of the finish line as Royal Hospital School came through to win 1, 2, 3 despite every effort of the Rutland team who fought hard all the way to the line.

Final standings:

1. Royal Hospital School

2. Rutland Red

3. Sevenoaks School

4. RGS Guildford

5. Rutland Green
