Metal Cutting Wheel Arbor

Cheapskate Tool For Using That Last Inch Of A Cutoff Disk

Yes, I an frugal. Some might call me "cheap". My small metal cutoff tool uses a hand grinder for the motor, and due to gear casing size can only use the outside 2 inches of a 4.5 inch diameter cutoff disk. This leaves another 1.5 inches of potentially usable disk that cannot be utilized. As a result, I have this pile of half-used cutoff disks and, until now, no way to make any use of them.

Today I used my metal lathe to turn the parts for a 1.25 inch OD arbor for these cutoffdisks. The shaft is a 3/8 inch standard threaded bolt. Now I can chuck the small disks in my hand drill, drill press, or lathe and use them for any needed cutting function. This lets me use that last inch or so of previously wasted cutting capability.

Of course, the arbor also holds full sized cutoff disks if I need that much diameter in a situation where using the arbor is appropriate.

My Metal Cutoff Saw. The gear housing on the hand grinder prevents use of the last 1.5 inches of cutoff disk.

Here is the Mandrel or arbor that I built to utilize the partly used cutoff disks in my electric hand drill, drill press, or metal lathe:
