Background

Loopkin Bluestone's life began deep beneath the earth in the hidden svirfneblinian city of Helmstone.  His parents were devout worshippers of Nivi Rhombodazzle, particularly while gambling, which both did daily.  With grey skin resembling beaten stone and a bald head, the introverted Loopkin grew into a wiry, acrobatic deep gnome that always carried a smileless expression at all times..... even when filled with joy.  Completely engulfed in flames after falling into a burning oven during a kitchen accident while a toddler, Loopkin's unexplainable natural resistance to fire was kept a secret by his parents for fear of local reaction.  Approached by the church, he showed great potential in the use of the ceremonial, gnomish hooked hammer that was preferred by the clergy.  His being ambidextrous and endless hours of dextrous practice resulted in uniquely amazing prowess with the weapon (weapon finesse).  When not at the temple, Loopkin spent his days (and nights) gambling with cards, dice or ANY game of chance.

One day, while stroking his two black cats  that loved him so, a massive assault of duergar warriors descended upon Helmstone.  Completely caught by surprise, the city was crushed within hours.  Loopkin had made his way to defend the church, ripped limbs and smashed deep dwarven bones with the immaculate gnomish hooked hammer of the fallen head priestess of Nivi Rhombodazzle (heirloom).  Headlong into madness, he used his hook to severe the noses of eleven duergar women and hastily stuffed them into his belt pouches.  Clearly outnumbered, Loopkin ran into a series of tunnels for seemingly days...... suddenly, his eyes burst with agony as the light of the sun exploded into the deep gnome's reality for the first time.  He collapsed into unconsciousness.

Awoken by the poke of a stick and the smell of pie, Loopkin set his eyes upon the beaming smile of an elderly, surface gnome woman.  Introducing herself as Jubilee June, she led him to her tiny house for food, drink and rest.  Lying on a pie-shaped bed was a gaunt human with a warm smile on his face as he slept.  In the morning, Jubilee Jones' mood had dramatically changed to one of detached melancholy.  She said that she only had room for her son, Unchosen, and she wasn't in the mood for visitors anymore.  Forced to live day-to-day for month after month and year after year, Loopkin befriended several of the rougher elements in town as he gambled to survive.  He learned several new "talents" from his gnomish buddies.  In addition, his friendship with Unchosen grew over time.  Having never smiled in his life, Loopkin was fascinated by the bizarre lover of nature that practiced martial arts each and every day with the aid of Venger, Unchosen's deceased opossum.  Eventually, they performed locally with Unchosen's singing combined with Loopkin's awkward dancing.  The deep gnome's intensely dour look on his face while nimbly performing various dances contrasted massively with the permanently distant gaze of exuberance from Unchosen while he sang of the wind and the moon and so many, many wonders of nature.   Sweet strawberry cider was often drank by all afterwards

One shocking day during the fall, Jubilee June was accused of and ultimately executed for cooking a halfling!  The next morning, for the first time in Loopkin's life, he did not see a smile on  Unchosen's face.  From a distance, he saw Unchosen release an incredibly large, trapped rabbit with the color of pure coal.  Loopkin Bluestone hastily donned his armor, grabbed his heirloom weapon along with the rest of his adventuring gear and ran to catch up with his only true friend.
