ARE YOU STILL UNSURE OF WHAT YOU WANT TO DO FOR A CAREER? LOOK AT APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMS AS A POSSIBILITY

For years, high schools have pushed for students to attend a two or four year college, which for many, is an appropriate option in order for them to fulfil their career dreams. But let’s face it, college is not for all of our students. A recent article in The Spokesman-Review states that “seventy percent of companies in Washington state anticipate that they are going to struggle in fill craft positions.” They state that “by 2019, Washington will need 15,000 carpenters, 28,000 laborers and about 9,000 operators.” A survey done by the Associated General Contractors of America state that “the problem is only going to get worse as an older generation retires.”

With this in mind, if you are still undecided about where you might want to go as a career, you might want to check out some apprenticeship programs. There are at least 150 programs where the starting pay is usually between $15.00-$20.00 an hour while you learn the trade and then increase as your skills increase. Health benefits are usually also part of the package as you progress through the apprenticeship.

SCC has an Apprenticeship and Journeyman Training Center where you can get skills in the following programs: Aerospace (AJAC), General Contractors, Avista Line Construction and Line workers, Bricklayers/Tilesetters, Cement Masons, Electrical Workers, Elevator Construction Mechanics, Heat and Frost Insulators, Homebuilding/Residential Carpenters, Independent Electrical Contractors, Ironworkers, Laborers, Painters, Plumbers/Steamfitters, Roofers, Sheet Metal Workers, Tree Trimmers, and Western States Operating Engineers Training Institute. If you would like information on any of these options, please visit us in the Career Center.
